The 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers (so called because it was fought amid trees felled by a tornado) is one of the three most important battles in the development of the United States. In 2000, Congress established the Fallen Timbers Battlefield and Fort Miamis National Historic Site, which received Affiliated Unit of the National Park Service designation.

The Fallen Timbers Battlefield comprises three separate sites: the 196-acre Fallen Timbers Battlefield (discovered in 1995 and still in development); the Fallen Timbers Monument, a 9-acre Ohio Historical Society site at Side Cut Metropark on Fallen Timbers Lane (off Jerome Road) in Maumee; and the Fort Miamis site (under excavation), also in Maumee. The battlefield and the monument are connected by a bridge spanning U.S. 24. The monument is open year-round.
